RUNES - The Viking Oracle
For as long as anyone can tell, runes have
been around helping people in the northern European area and now they are
making quite a comeback on a worldwide basis due partly to commercialism and
partly due to the unknown uprooting of many occult practices. People are
looking for a better way to live and people are looking towards oracles for
answers and guidance to their troubles. This is where the runes come into play. Raido

Runes come from the Nordic area where the ancient Vikings once lived, worked,
and fought. Though they were relatively savage in their outings, the Vikings
were people in touch with Earth and the many forces that coexisted with them.
They have a whole lore that includes many popular god figures such as Thor, the
son of Odin. Thor carried a mighty hammer and many of us know him from comic
books. The father of Thor, Odin, was the creator of the Runes and is the most
important holy figure of the Viking people. Odin hung upside down from a tree
limb for a chance of higher knowledge and right before he came down from the
tree limb, he was bestowed with the new system called the Runes. These symbols
were used for writing and magic by the high priests.
Shown below are the 25 runes most used today and their brief meanings.

Likely an important rune for the Vikings, Raido signified a long journey.

Kenaz represents a torch or some other source of light.

Gebo was used to denote a sacrifice to the gods.

Wunjo can translate as comfort, joy, or glory.

Hagalaz is the rune for hail, either in terms of the weather, or hailing
projectiles in battle.

Nauthiz means need or necessity.

Isa means ice.

Jera translates as year or harvest.

Eithwaz is the rune for yew, a sacred tree used to make rune wands.

The meaning and/or translation of

Algiz denoted defence, protection, or self-preservation.

Sowilo represented the sun, an important element in pagan worship.

The rune of the war god Tyr, Tiwaz was often carved on weaponry.

Berkano was associated with the birch tree, with Idun, goddess of spring, and
with fertility.

Ehwaz is the rune for horse.

Mannaz means man or mankind

Laguz is associated with water.

Scholars believe Ingwaz can refer either to the Danish hero Ing or to the
Danes in general.

Dagaz is the rune for day or daylight.

Othila means inheritance or the passing on of property or knowledge. It can
also refer to an ancestral home or to one's native land.

Uruz was associated with the now-extinct wild ox known as aurochs. The rune
also represents strength, speed, and good health.

Thurisaz refers to the giants of Norse mythology.

Ansuz could be used to refer to any deity, but it was most often associated
with Odin, the Viking equivalent of Zeus.

Fehu can mean cattle, gold, or wealth in general.

Rune of no meaning. Some dispute the existence of this as a true rune. The
meaning is that of the non-knowable nature.
