Also known as: Benzoin Resin, Gum Benzoin, Gum Benjamin A warm, relaxing and calming resin, with a sweet balsamic, vanilla-like aroma that is considered soothing and comforting. It has been known to stimulate imagination and is good for use in creative work. Warms & opens the heart, antiseptic, cleanses one's aura & environment, inspiration, peace, love, memory, eases depression, mental protection, wisdom. This resin has been used for millennia as an incense in a number of cultures. Benzoin is calming, soothing, and restores confidence for the Work. This resin is good for purification and works well with other scents and influences, especially as a preservative. Stimulating and aphrodisiac, it is an excellent ingredient in incense for love magick and was once a frequent ingredient in Eclectic medicine. Benzoin Siam is less like Benzoin Sumatra and more like true storax, for which it can substitute. Thai or Siam Benzoin has a wonderful vanilla scent when raw and an intensely sweet, almost rose-like scent when burned, but if burned too quickly, makes a burning plastic smell, and can quickly fill a room with smoke so burn on a foil tent over charcoal. Botanical Information Benzoin resin or styrax resin is a natural balsamic resin obtained from the bark of several species of trees in the genus Styrax, native to Southeast Asia. The resin is collected from from cuts in the bark of the tree. Originally a milky-white substance the resin solidifies when exposed to air and sunlight. It is used in perfumes, some kinds of incense, and medicine. Its principle component is benzoic acid. Commonly called "benzoin", it is called "benzoin resin" to distinguish it from the crystalline compound benzoin. Benzoin resin does not contain this crystalline compound. Benzoin is also called gum benzoin or gum benjamin, but "gum" is incorrect as benzoin is not a water-soluble polysaccharide. Its name probably came via Italian from Arabic luban jawi ("frankincense from Java"), because it was brought from Indonesia. Use Benzoin resin is a common ingredient in incense-making and perfumery because of its aroma and fixative properties. Gum benzoin is a major component of the type of church incense used in Russia and some other Orthodox Christian societies. Benzoin resin is also used in blended types of Japanese incense, Indian incense, Chinese incense, and Papier d'Arménie. When called sambrani or sambraani, it is a popular Indian incense used to scent and treat hair and prevent infections. There are two types of benzoin resin used in incense and perfumery - benzoin Siam and benzoin Sumatra. Benzoin Siam is obtained from Styrax tonkinensis found across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Benzoin Sumatra is obtained from Styrax benzoin grown on the island of Sumatra. Both varieties are pathogenic resins, which are exuded from the tree when it is damaged. In perfumery, benzoin is used as a fixative, slowing the dispersion of essential oils and other fragrance materials into the air.
